American actress whose career took off in the 1950s though it didn't quite reach the heights she aspired to. Pushed as a potential successor to Grace Kelly as Hitch's new leading lady, her health problems and pregnancy prevented her from taking the lead female part in "Vertigo" in 1958. She is one of the few people to have starred in a feature directed by Hitchcock, as well as appearing in episodes in both Alfred Hitchcock Presents (she starred in the first episode, "Revenge") and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. With the exception of Hitch himself, she was the only actor to have appeared in both Psycho and its trailer.
