You Got To Have Luck
Convict Sam Cobbett (John Cassavetes), who is serving four consecutive 99-year life sentences for murder and robbery, escapes from prison and holds up at a small house in the country. He finds a young woman (Mary - Marisa Pavan) at home alone and proceeds to bully her into attending to his every whim. With nothing to lose, Sam tells her he will kill her "for free" if she disobeys him. After eating her food and taking her money and clothes, he boasts about having to have a bit of luck, but he doesn't account for one important detail he has seemingly not taken into consideration! Eventually, the warden and the police turn up at the house and arrest him.

SPOILERS
The one thing Sam doesn't realise is that Mary is deaf. When Sam makes her answer the telephone and repeat his words to the caller (her mother), this causes concern as to how Mary is able to understand what the caller is saying? The police are called and trace Sam to the house.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION...
I must admit this was a pretty clever ending, but a frustrating one because it will make you want to watch it again to see the clues you missed the first time.
